QUILLING as an art form began to flourish in the early 1600’s. French and Italian monks and nuns made the first pieces using paper from old documents and letters and the gilt-edged pages of old books. They rolled strips of paper around a large feather quill, creating scrolls and coils to decorate religious symbols and to detail pilgrimage mementos. This is the blurb that accompanies all of my quilled pieces. It gives a very brief history of this ancient art. I began quilling many years ago as a hobby and a way to create unusual Christmas and Easter decorations. I taught a few classes to girl scouts and elementary school classes, but did not have much time for this intricate art. Now that I have retired from a full time job as a staff accountant, I am able to pursue what has become a passion. Some pieces I create are two-dimensional, but I really enjoy creating pieces in three dimensions. I like to use color and shapes to capture reality with my coils and scrolls of paper.
