Art in the Park Application


What: Art in the Park, the annual juried outdoor exhibition of fine art and fine craft, is Lawrence's premiere arts event and is sponsored by the Lawrence Art Guild. Featuring the highest quality work by many area artists and craftspeople, as well as continuous musical entertainment, food vendors, and family fun, it is the Lawrence Art Guild's primary fund-raising event. More than 10,000 people typically attend Art in the Park.

Where: Located in South Park, 12th & Massachusetts, at the south end of beautiful downtown Lawrence.

When: Always the first Sunday of May. This year May 5, 2013.  Event is open to the public 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Rain date:  The second Sunday of May. (Rain cancellations will be announced that morning on KLWN 1320AM radio and at 785-979-7039 by 8:00 am.)  NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN.

Eligibility: Art in the Park is open to any artist 18 or older. Only original fine art and fine craft are eligible and must comprise the majority of the work to be displayed. Reproductions must be identified as such. Not eligible for entry are macramé, crochet, decoupage, novelties, shell craft, mass-produced T-shirts, and any items made from commercial kits, molds, patterns, or books (even if modified). The Lawrence Art Guild reserves the right to refuse the display and sale of artwork that is not represented by submitted images, in which case the artist will be asked to leave the show without refund of entry fees. Two dimensional media that are eligible include graphics/printmaking, painting, digital, pastels, photography, and mixed media. Two-dimensional work must be matted or framed.. Three-dimensional media that are eligible include ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, sculpture, wood, and mixed media.

Entry Screening: Acceptance is based on artwork that exhibits originality, craftsmanship, imaginative use of materials, and aesthetic qualities. A screening committee will judge the overall suitability of artwork based on images submitted. The screening committee's decisions are final.

Photos/Prints: All artists must submit three (3), good quality images (no slides) for each medium of art to be displayed; plus a drawing or photo of their booth set-up.  Photographs must be of original art. Label images with your name and artwork title, medium, and dimensions; and indicate the top of the work. Artists must include SASE for return of photos. Attached jpgs need to be under 1 megabyte each (optimal is at least 500 KB.)"

ENTRY MUST BE POSTMARKED OR HAND-DELIVERED BY 5:00 P.M., FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2013. ONLINE ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY MIDNIGHT, FRIDAY, MARCH 1 2013:

Late entries will be returned unjuried.
Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (of sufficient size and postage) with entry for notification of acceptance to Art In the Park for return of printed images. Notice of status will be mailed by the third Friday of March. Submit entry to: Art in the Park, Lawrence Art Guild, P.O. Box 1357, Lawrence, Kansas 66044-8357.

Booth Fees: Guild members - $55.00 Non-members: $95.00 Senior Citizen booth (60 or older with ID): $5.00 discount

Group Fee: $110.00 (one 10X10 space) with an additional fee of 30.00 for an additional space. A group consists of two or more people one of whom needs to be a member of the guild. Membership may be completed at the time of entry.

All booth spaces are 10x10. Additional booth space is same price as original booth space.

The registration fee is non-refundable (unless not selected) and includes a processing fee of $5.00. An artist who is not accepted will have all but the processing fee returned. A member must be a paid-up member to enter at the member rate. Artists may apply for Guild membership at the same time as entering by completing membership form on back of entry form; please submit separate checks.

Setup/Checkout: Artists may set up after check-in at the information table on the east side of the park, beginning at 7:00 a.m. (no earlier!). No electrical outlets are available. Artists must be present with their work. It will not be acceptable to have someone work for
you, except for breaks. Ignoring this rule will result in the artist being asked to leave the show without refund of entry fees. Artists are responsible for collecting sales tax (8.85%) on all items sold. A 10% commission on sales will be collected by the Lawrence Art Guild, due at the end of the show. This 10% allows the Guild to make donations and grants to area artists and arts organizations, as well as pay for yearly expenses (advertising, honorarium fees) beyond that which the entry fees afford. Artists must check out at the Information table whether or not any artwork was sold.

Cash Awards: Artists' work will be judged on-site by a panel representing local artists and art organizations. Awards will be based on the overall quality of art displayed by each artist. Best of Show will receive $200, 1st in 3D- $125, 2nd in 3D- $75, 3rd in 3D- $50. The same
monetary amounts will be awarded in the 2D category. Honorable Mentions will also be awarded at the discretion of the judges but carry no monetary value.

Liability/Agreement: The Lawrence Art Guild and the City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department accept no responsibility for loss or damage to any artist’s work exhibited at Art in the Park or photographs submitted for jurying. Submission of an entry constitutes permission to have one’s submitted slides/prints used, or art photographed, for publicity purposes and constitutes agreement with all conditions set forth in this prospectus. Artists are encouraged to provide their own insurance for their artwork.
