Art in the Park

Event Details

Art in the Park will be held on September 18th and 19th (Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday, 10am to 5pm) in South Park, 12th & Massachusetts. A shade filled park at the south end of beautiful downtown Lawrence.

Art in the Park is a Lawrence Art Guild event. Since 1964 this event has featured high quality work by many area artists and craftspeople and a projected 20,000 visitors. $1,500 in cash awards will be given, live music (keeping in mind noise levels to not detract from the artwork) and food vendors on Massachusetts St.

Art in the Park was voted "Best Event" by the public in Lawrence's Best of Lawrence 2020 Awards.

Art in the Park is the Lawrence Art Guild’s primary fund-raising event. In 2019 The Lawrence Art Guild (a not for profit organization) had two very successful “All Members Shows”, held an online Holiday Art Fair event and gave $9,000 to local public high school art programs.

Accepted artists are also invited to have a couple of pieces of their artwork on display in the Phoenix Gallery sponsored "Art in the Park Preview Show". Opening reception will coordinate with Lawrence’s Final Friday Art Walk.

Note: Application Deadline is May 31st 2021. All applications will be accepted through Zapplication only. We will not be allowing mail in applications. Zapplication is a free online artist application service.

Eligibility

Only originals of fine art and fine craft are eligible and must comprise the majority of the work to be displayed. Reproductions must be signed, numbered and identified as such. Not eligible for entry are mass-produced T- shirts and any items made from commercial kits or molds. The Lawrence Art Guild reserves the right to refuse the display and sale of artwork that is not represented by medium, style, and quality represented in the submitted images, in which case the artist will be asked to leave without refund of entry fees.

Eligible Media

Graphics/printmaking, drawing, leather, metal, glass, painting, digital, pastels, photography, and mixed media in all media, ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, sculpture, wood.

(Artists juried into the 2020 event will be sent a coupon for free submission fee)

Booth spaces are assigned on a first come first serve basis, so apply early!!!

Cash Awards

Artists’ work will be judged on-site by a panel representing local artists and/or arts organizations. Awards will be based on the overall quality of art displayed by each artist. Cash awards will total $1,500.

Electricity

The hours of operation will be during daylight hours, there will be no electricity provided to artists booths. There will be access to electricity in the gazebo (centrally located) for charging purposes.

Photos

All artists must submit four (4) good-quality images showing at least one work for each medium of art to be displayed, plus an example of their booth set-up (drawings will be allowed). Images must be of original art created by the exhibiting artist.

  • 8/18 Booth assignments sent (this date may be earlier depending on the status of the virus).
  • 9/17 Early Set-Up. This service is optional. Booth locations will be marked at the park by 4pm. Artists are able to start setting up their tent and display materials at that time for a small fee (est 10.00). We will have security scheduled for that evening. The coordinator must be notified if you plan on setting up early.
  • 9/18 Show Start.
  • Set-Up starting at 6:00 AM (no assigned set up times) Hours 10am - 6pm
  • Security will be provided from 6pm to 10am Sunday morning.
  • 9/19 Show Closes - Hours 10am - 5pm.

Art in the Park will be held rain or shine.

Covid Cancelation

The Lawrence Art Guild Board will make the final decision on cancelation. Taking into consideration the guidelines/recommendations from The City of Lawrence and the CDC. It is our primary concern to protect the health of our artists and patrons. If Art in the Park 2021 is canceled all both fees will be returned to the artists. Jury fees will not be reimbursed.

​Artist Information

  1. Booth spaces are assigned by the Lawrence Art Guild and are not interchangeable. Both spaces are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. ​
  2. Artists must be present during the entire event and must personally staff their booth space. It is acceptable and encouraged that you have assistance but under no circumstances may agents, dealers or representatives attend the event in place of the artist.
  3. Artists may show only work in categories and bodies of work approved by the jury. The Lawrence Art Guild reserves the right to refuse the display and sale of artwork that is not represented by submitted images, in which case the artist will be removed from the show without refund of any fees.
  4. Artists must define “limited edition” through their Artist Statement and must disclose their process to the buyer. Original art must occupy more than 50% of the applicant’s booth space. Reproductions of 2-D work must clearly be labeled.
  5. Ceramic works must be handcrafted/made by the artist. If multiple pieces of the same design are displayed, each must be signed or marked by the artist.
  6. Artist musts comply with all staff and uniformed security regarding site safety and regulations. Vehicles must be parked only in designated areas.
  7. Art in the Park is a family-oriented event. Artwork intended for mature audiences will not be considered. On-site representatives will be enforcing this policy throughout the show.
  8. In all disputes that result in an artist being disqualified from appearing, a refund of fees will not be given.

  10. Tents should be designed for outdoor use and capable of withstanding the elements. All display materials will be provided by the artists (including tents, panels and chairs). Weights or tie-downs are required. The Lawrence Art Guild assumes no responsibility for loss, damage or theft.

Booth Fees

Our booth fees are low to minimize the burden on artists. To offset this reduced fee we request a 10% donation of sales (not to exceed 200.00) be made by artists to the Lawrence Art Guild at check out.

  • Lawrence Art Guild members: $60.00
  • Non-members: $90.00

*Lawrence Art Guild Membership may be purchased concurrently with booth fee at check out. Membership fee is $30.00 ($20.00/Senior). By becoming a member you qualify for discounts, acceptance into our "All Members" shows and are invited to guest speaker and workshops.

All booth spaces are 10' x 10'. We try to provide a 2-3' clearance between booths. The backs of booths open up to the park and there is usually unlimited space. Typically, at least 5' can be expected. A number of tables may be available upon request at no charge (first come first serve).

Set-Up

Early set up will begin at 5pm Sept 17th (please check in before setting up). On Sept 18th, check-in begins at 6:00 am at the info booth near the gazebo. A map with your location will be sent to you by email with instructions before the event.

For those setting up on the 18th, the park will be mapped with artists booth numbers the night before if you would like to check out your location. Please let the staff know if your location is not suitable and you have any questions or concerns about your location. One of our primary goals is to keep our artists happy.

Note: No electrical outlets, tents or display materials will be provided by the Lawrence Art Guild.

Checkout

Artists must check out at the Information table whether or not any artwork was sold. A 10% commission on sales will be collected by the Lawrence Art Guild, due at the end of the show. This 10% allows the Guild to keep entry fees low, provide grants, as well as pay for yearly expenses (advertising, honorarium fees) beyond that which the entry fees afford. $9,000 of these dollars were given to area high school art programs in 2019.

IMPORTANT: A booth site map with options for the booth location is available on Zapplication. Please note desired location when filling out your application. Music will be at the Gazebo (close to letter G) and food vendors will be along Massachusetts Street. Artists tend to like a variety of locations for a variety of reasons. You may also choose to not have a preference. Please note preferences if you have any, such as near or away from food. Please also list if you have any restrictions or limitations physically.
